Ramsey holds sentimental spot for Freeze, Rebels
Rivals250 athlete Jalen Ramsey has 16 scholarship offers from schools in power conferences all over the country.
Ramsey's first offer, however, came from a rising program in the Sun Belt Conference, so when the coach at Arkanss State back then told him that offer was good at his new digs as well, those words meant something.
So Ramsey was in Oxford, Miss., recently, checking out Ole Miss and visiting with new Rebels coach Hugh Freeze. Ole Miss, Ramsey said, made a strong first impression.
"That was a great visit," Ramsey said. "The whole campus is beautiful. Ole Miss has a great coaching staff with high energy. They told me I would be a great asset to them. They said they'd love for me to commit to them but they didn't put any pressure. They said they'd be with me the entire way and they said I was No. 1 cornerback on their board."
Ole Miss has won just one Southeastern Conference game over the past two seasons. The Rebels' recent struggles, however, won't be a detriment in Freeze's pursuit of the 6-foot, 183-pound Ramsey, who primarily projects as a cornerback on the next level despite proficiency on the offensive side of the ball as well.
"I never try to go off past years especially when it's a new coaching staff," Ramsey said. "That staff is accustomed to winning. They're going to try to build that back up. Coach Freeze gave me my first offer when he was at Arkansas State and he honored that offer when he got to Ole Miss. That made a big impression on me."
Ramsey said he also has a strong relationship with Ole Miss assistant Wesley McGriff, who joined the Rebels after a successful stint at Vanderbilt.
"His cornerbacks are always really good and competitive," Ramsey said.
Ramsey said he has "no clue" when he'll narrow his choices or make a decision.
"I just want to be able to see all my options and weigh them out, compare apples to apples, take my time and know that I'm 100 percent when it comes time to make a decision," Ramsey said. "I'm pretty open right now."
