Several of Ohio's top junior prospects were in Columbus on Sunday for Ohio State's junior day. The 2013 class in Ohio looks to have tremendous depth at numerous positions including the linebacker position. Dayton (Ohio) Chaminade-Julienne product Darrien Howard is one of the top linebackers in the class and the 6-foot-2, 245-pound prospect got an up close look at Ohio State on Sunday.
"It was pretty good," said Howard. "We just toured the facilities and got to look at the student recreation center and that was pretty nice. We got to go up in the pressbox at the football stadium so that was pretty cool. (The visit) was nice."
Howard fits the mold of a classic Big Ten style middle linebacker and spent most of his time in Columbus just getting to know many of the new coaches at Ohio State.
"I got to talk with Zach Smith, Mark Pantoni, coach (Luke) Fickell, and Urban Meyer," he said. "They were just trying to get to know me better."
Though Howard left campus without an offer, he was assured that he sits high on the in-state board at the linebacker position and that Meyer would just like to see more him before deciding on an offer.
"They said they want me to go to camp," Howard said. "Urban Meyer needs to see me (perform in-person)."
In addition to Ohio State, Howard is hearing from several other BCS conference programs and already holds a pair of verbal offers. At the moment, he says he is keeping things open and that no one school holds the edge.
"I have offers from Cincinnati and Bowling Green," he said. "Michigan State, Kentucky, Louisville, and Tennessee are also recruiting me. I don't have any favorite schools right now."
Howard is rated a four-star prospect by Rivals.com.
