Recruits react to Hazell
Kyle Charters
GoldandBlack.com Although the news was still fresh Tuesday evening, Purdue's class of 2013 football recruited started to react to the hiring of Darrell Hazell as the new coach.
The following is some of their thoughts. Check back here, as this will be regularly updated in coming hours.
• Illinois lineman John Strauser says he's looking forward to learning more about Hazell.
"I know he coached at Penn (1992-94) under coach Al Bagnoli," Strauser wrote via text. "Coach Bagnoli is currently my brother's coach at UPenn. I think very highly of that staff and I am sure the same could be said about Coach Hazell. I am excited to learn more about my new head football coach."
Strauser said he'd have more comments once Hazell's hire became official and he had time to learn more about the Boilers' new boss.
• Texas wide receiver Myles Norwood has been an interested observer since Danny Hope was fired, saying he was close to the former coach in the recruiting process.
But he was glad to learn of a new coach Tuesday night.
"Great news," he text," excited about the hire."
• Texas offensive lineman Dwayne Johnson had heard only about 15 minutes prior, but said he had already hit Google to find out more about Hazell.
"I am looking forward to talking to him and getting to know him more," Johnson said via phone.
Johnson had not been previously recruited by Kent State, and being from Texas, he didn't know much about Hazell and staff.
"I want to find out what type of linemen he likes," Johnson said. "And I want to find out what (coaches) he's going to bring in, or will he keep the staff. And what type of guy and coach is he? Everything I knew about Coach Hope I want to get to know about him.
"And I want to see if Purdue is still the right fit for me."
