Dan Monteroso likely will miss the season after breaking his collarbone during Thursday's night practice.
Purdue coach Darrell Hazell said Monteroso will have surgery on Saturday.
Monteroso was one of the most-talked about freshmen players even before training camp started.
Many of his new teammates raved about his physical abilities - his size, his speed, the athleticism of the former basketball player - but also how quickly he seemed to pick up John Shoop's complex offense.
That helped Monteroso get some work with the first-team offense at points in camp, though it's safer to say he was among the top six receivers over the first 13 days of camp.
"Dan Monteroso is putting on a show," cornerback Normondo Harris said during camp. "He's climbing. I like what he's doing. He's standing out. He gets open pretty much on every play. He just knows how to get open and when the ball comes his way, he catches it and he usually doesn't go down right away, he gets a couple more yards after the catch, which is good."
Monteroso was injured during a one-on-one drill on Thursday night, working against Ricardo Allen. Allen, typically, was playing physical against the 6-foot-3 freshman, but Monteroso was giving it back, running a route into a end zone. He went up to make a catch but didn't, and after landing, he hardly moved. Allen quickly called for the athletic trainers.
