Purdue's already struggling offense will be without one of its most important pieces this weekend and potentially beyond.
Tight end Gabe Holmes will miss the Notre Dame game with a wrist injury sustained Tuesday, Coach Darrell Hazell said Wednesday.
"It's pretty serious," Hazell said.
Holmes had an MRI Wednesday, which will reveal the severity of the injury.
The tight end leads the Boilermakers with nine catches through two games.
Justin Sinz will move into Holmes' spot as the No. 1 tight end, but Sinz already has been starting because Purdue employs double-tight end sets often. Sinz is a reliable receiver and steady blocker, but Purdue will have to dip into its depth chart to find the next tight end up.
"It puts a lot of strain on your two-tight end sets, so we'll have to do some other things, without tipping our hand too much," Hazell said. "Sterling Carter has to step up now and be one of those backup guys who can help us. We'll use (Patrick) Bade in certain situations. They have to step up and do a good job."
