Frankie Williams didn't pass a concussion test on Thursday and won't play against Northern Illinois on Saturday, Darrell Hazell said during his radio show on Thursday night.
Antoine Lewis will make his first career start in Williams' place.
Williams is second on the team in tackles (21) and is tied for the team lead in pass breakups (three).
Williams' absence likely will mean more playing time for Normondo Harris, too, as Purdue's nickel back in place of Lewis. Next up would be Leroy Clark, a freshman.
Harris has started six games in his career, but he's been nursing a knee injury for the past year. Still, he said this week he'll be ready to play.
Lewis has no concerns about whether he's ready.
"I consider myself like fine wine," Lewis said earlier this season. "Going from last season when I was getting more reps, more reps, more reps, I would just get better every week. Even to now, the more reps I get, the better and smarter I get. I'm not one of those guys who gets reps and forgets what happens. Every rep I get, I kind of mentally chart that. Out of this formation on this down and distance, teams can do this. So I can keep it all in my memory bank - I have like a million things in my head before the snap, so that helps me make plays."
