Signing period opens
Wednesday, Purdue coach Matt Painter signs his 2014 recruiting class, or at least the first portion of it, with three high school seniors expected to sign with the Boilermakers as the NCAA's early signing period begins.
A quick breakdown
Who: Purdue will sign Ohioans Vince Edwards and Dakota Mathias and Massachusetts' Jacquil Taylor.
Edwards said he will sign around 11:15 a.m., with Mathias will formalize his commitment in the morning also. Taylor might do a signing event Saturday, but will be sending his paperwork to Purdue Wednesday morning.
Painter is scheduled to conduct a 12:30 p.m. media conference to discuss his signees, the day of his team's game against Central Connecticut State.
How many: It's three. For now, at least.
Purdue has actively recruited and scouted post prospects to add more size to the '14 class, but nothing's materialized as of yet. If nothing does, that search will certainly extend into the spring, when the Boilermakers will have plenty of scholarship room to pursue high school or junior college players or fifth-year transfers, the market Purdue came up big in last spring when it added Errick Peck and Sterling Carter.
The fit: With so many promising sophomores and freshmen in the program, Purdue found three prospects who would seem to fit well into what Painter and Co. are looking for going forward.
After last season, Painter vowed to have more "skilled" teams.
Edwards will almost certainly play the "power forward" role at Purdue, with his abilities to dribble, pass and shoot giving him the matchup potential Painter is fond of at that position.
Mathias is a shooter in all its forms, whether long-range, mid-range, pull-up or spot-up.
And Taylor, who's coming off a foot injury, gives the Boilermakers length and athleticism in their front court, whether it be long-term as a center or interior forward.
Stay tuned this afternoon for more on three signees and what Painter has to say about their additions.
