NFL Boilers: Phillips a great value; Week 12
There couldn't have been many better free agent pickups last offseason than Shaun Phillips.
Working on a one-year, $1-million deal, Phillips already has nine sacks in Denver, following his nine-year stint in San Diego. The total is only 1.5 short of his season-high, showing that he still has a lot left in what's been an outstanding career. (Remember when people used to think Shawn Merriman was better than him?).
"For me, it was kind of shocking that more teams weren't calling me," Phillips told the Associated Press. "I was coming off a good year. A few teams, obviously, made offers but they weren't anywhere near what I felt like I deserved."
Phillips, a fourth-round draft pick in 2003, has 78.5 sacks in his nine-plus seasons in the NFL, more than anyone else - aside from Minnesota's Jared Allen - in his draft class. He has already reached a $400,000 incentive for reaching eight sacks; he'll hit another one with 10 sacks.
Rob Ninkovich might not put up the sack numbers that other great defensive ends do in the league, but he's proving to be extremely valuable nonetheless.
Among defensive ends in a 4-3 scheme, Pro Football Focus lists Ninkovich as their fourth-best player.
Nickovich, who has five sacks this season, had 13 tackles against Denver in the Patriots' comeback victory.
Russell Wilson has always been a huge admirer of Drew Brees, with both being shorter-than-standard quarterbacks.
They'll play on Monday night in a huge NFC showdown.
Somebody I've never heard of thinks Brees is soft, which is ridiculous.
The following is a look at the NFL Boilers, their roles and their Week 12 statistics.
