Starting safety Taylor Richards, who will be a senior in 2014, was arrested Saturday on for operating while intoxicated and minor consumption, according to Purdue police records.
First-year coach Darrell Hazell is aware of the incident but is allowing the legal process to evolve before determining any possible disciplinary action, he said in a release by the school.
"Hazell takes such matters seriously," the release said.
Richards, 20, was arrested at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, per records.
Richards was third on the team in tackles in 2013 with 64 and had an interception in his second season as a full-time starter. He was projected to start again next season.
But Hazell has been firm in his actions after legal issues in his first season with the Boilermakers. After receivers B.J. Knauf andJordan Woods were arrested for theft, Woods was suspended indefinitely (and never returned) and Knauf was suspended for two games.
Before the season started, Hazell suspended receiver O.J. Ross "indefinitely," which essentially amounted to Ross being kicked off the team.
