NFL Boilers: Brees hits milestone in Week 14
Drew Brees hit a couple milestones on Sunday, when the Saints defeated the Panthers for their 10th win of the season.
The former Boilermaker became the fastest quarterback to ever reach 50,000 yards in the NFL - and only the fifth to hit the mark - by hitting it in his 183 rd career game. Peyton Manning, who is in the 50k club with Brett Favre, Dan Marino and John Elway, had previously been the fastest, hitting the mark in 191 games.
The record wasn't the only one Brees hit vs. Carolina, as he also set a league record by exceeding 30 touchdown passes for six straight seasons.
Cliff Avril has started only two games for the Seahawks this season, yet leads Seattle in sacks, with seven-and-a-half.
Considering his injuries during the summer - he was held back by foot and hamstring problems during the summer and fall - the former Detroit Lion says he felt like the odd man out in his first season in Seattle.
"Most definitely," Avril told the Seattle Times. "You sign, you are on a new team. I was with Detroit for five years and I had the same defensive line coach, the same D-line players around me. So we knew what we had. But when you come to a new situation, they know what they have but they don't know what I bring to the table. It's all about just building that trust with those guys."
Avril, who signed with the Seahawks on a two-year, $13-million deal, has adjusted to playing a limited role. In Seattle, he's rotating on the defensive line, playing only about half of the defensive snaps.
"It was tough," Avril told The News Tribune. "Now, I am used to it just because it's been going on for 14 weeks. Initially, getting and understanding why they were doing it was the hard part.
"I think health standpoint and going into later on in the playoffs, I think that's part of the reason they went about it this way, too. To stay strong even through that stretch."
At first glance, Bernard Pollard looked as though he would very likely be facing a fine, or maybe even tossed from the Titans' game against the Broncos on Sunday.
His hit on Eric Decker looked bad, and drew a penalty. But after looking again, Pollard's hit appeared textbook and legal.
Here's 10 things you need to know about Nick Hardwick.
Although you probably already know a bunch of them.
Dustin Keller, who is out this season with a knee injury, says the NFL needs to do something about low hits.
Keller tweeted at tight end Rob Gronkowski, following the Patriot tight end's injury on Sunday.
"Praying for @RobGronkowski and a speedy recovery and a MAJOR comeback..something has to be done about these low hits!!!"
Keller is sitting out the season after a major knee injury suffered when he was hit in the lower body during the preseason.
