Purdue middle linebacker George Hall today was named to the Butkus Award watch list.

The Butkus Award is awarded annually to the nation's best linebacker and is presented by the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Fla.

The 6-foot-2, 250-pound Hall, from Groton, Conn., is one of 65 players on the list and one of eight from the Big Ten Conference. The others are Iowa's Chad Greenway and Abdul Hodge, Michigan's LaMarr Woodley, Northwestern's Tim McGarigle, Ohio State's A.J. Hawk, Penn State's Paul Posluszny and Wisconsin's Dontez Sanders.

Last season, his first as a starter for the Boilermakers, Hall ranked second on the team with 92 tackles (53 solo, 39 assists), including 6.0 for loss and 1.0 sacks. He led the way with two interceptions.

Hall received the team's Hammer Award, as the team's outstanding hitter, for the springs of 2003 and 2004 and also earned the Pit Bull Award for defense, for tenacity and intense play, in 2004.

The Butkus Award watch list will be trimmed to 10 semifinalists Oct. 20 and three finalists Nov. 10. The winner will be announced Dec. 10 at the Butkus Award Gala in Orlando. The award is presented to the winner by its namesake, NFL Hall of Famer Dick Butkus.
