Sindelar making big gains in recovery from knee surgery

Having played the last three-and-a-half games last season on a torn ACL, Elijah Sindelar isn't one who relishes the idea of sitting idle.

So the junior quarterback has hit rehabilitation following his January left knee surgery hard, pushing to get back on the field as soon as possible. That's allowed him to throw already, only two months post-op, which he's done toward the beginning of Purdue's spring practices.

But he has hopes for more before the spring game on April 7.

"Now this is a big if and I doubt it will happen, but I want to be able to throw routes on air during practice to the receivers and see if they'll let me do that," Sindelar said during an interview last week, following Purdue's fifth practice. "I'm going to say that's probably a negative, but I'm going to push for it.

"... It'd be really cool if I could do that."

Unlikely, but that Sindelar feels it could even be a possibility is a good sign that rehab is going well. His original timeline called for throwing at about three months, but he hit it at two.

"I'm very happy to be almost a month ahead of schedule, which is really nice," said Sindelar, who led Purdue to three straight victories, including in the Foster Farms Bowl, to end the '17 season. "There's nothing pressing for me to get back right now. I don't need to get back for spring ball and then hurt myself even more. They are trying to protect me and keep it slow, but it was too hard to just sit and not do a single thing."
