Things seem to be coming together pretty quickly ...

Wow. Color me impressed if those are the 2 names that we get. I think Fife would bring a ton of name recognition and recruiting pull even from Hoosier fans around the state. Plus he always played defense and played hard like Painter teaches so the philosophy would seem to be in tune. I don't know much about the Butler guy but if he's well thought of, they've also had the success to back up that image.

He and Matt must be awfully tight to allow Matt to hire one of his guys.

Wow! If those are the two coaches Painter gets to go along with Owens then kudos to him and the Purdue administration both for hitting two home runs!!!

I don't know, something icky about having Dane fife on staff, or any other former IU player for that matter.

I didn't even play for Purdue and I would have a hard time pouring my heart and soul into IU if I were hired there. But I guess it's a business move and Fife or anyone else would do what it takes to advance their career and land a higher profile head job somewhere.

Oh God no!

Hire Kent Benson and Keith Smart as special consultants to the program, also. That will officially send 25% of IU fans to the ER.

As the past few seasons have shown, the opportunity to move into a head coaching gig is greater as a Purdue assistant than as a Butler asssistant or an IPFW head coach. When Butler has success, big programs want to hire their head coach, not the top assistant. Meanwhile, it's going to be hard for Fife to get noticed at IPFW. He could be doing an awesome job but, even so, it would be nearly impossible for him to have Butler-like mid-major success there which makes it hard to get your name in the running for other positions.

Quite frankly, these hires make alot of sense and I think it's the first thing we'll see from the Painter/Burke shakedown. We may not have been able to offer the salaries to draw these guys before. Maybe we finally can.

People do mature.

For people that were wondering, here's Shrewsberry's profile from the Butler website. Alot of jobs around the state of Indiana.

Any clue what 2012 prospects Micah is/was the main recruiter for Butler? His profile is blank but was curious is Harris or RJ was one or not

I had forgotten that he played at Cathederal.

People want to work for both these guys because they will run through walls for their assistants.

How would you know? I just don't want Fife, is that some kind of crime?

Thanks for that link I had heard his name thrown around a lot but never really took the initiative to read up on him. It looks like the guy has paid his dues and would be a great pick-up.

I don't blame Heller for not wanting Fife. I have a bit of an aversion to him to just remembering his playing days. I'd have a hard time cheering for him but I'd get over that pretty quickly. If he's the best guy for the job so be it. They both would seem like great gets.

Posted on 4/11 12:03 PM | IP: Logged

Also I gotta imagine Fife has some great connections in Michigan too!

Posted on 4/11 12:04 PM | IP: Logged

How often does anyone really cheer for the assistant coaches? Only the HC gets announced during the games.

Posted on 4/11 12:11 PM | IP: Logged

on the # of assistants turned head coach. His tree may grow faster than Gene's did.

Posted on 4/11 12:12 PM | IP: Logged

No, they announce all 4 of the coaches. At least at home games, they do.

Posted on 4/11 12:17 PM | IP: Logged

I was hoping for Cardinal or Brantley to be one of the hires. Not saying this will not work, just thought it would be nice to have a former college/pro big man to coach our big men.

Are you sure about that? Has that changed? I know in the early '00s, the assistant coaches were definitely announced, because everyone always cheered loudly for Cuonzo.

Look I hate IU more then anyone and Dane Fife, when he played there. But that would be a monster hire!!! Also, it would make IU fans sick!!!

It was out there, i took the shot, nothing personal.

As for Fife, your personal feelings about him aside, if he is a good coach and the kids like him, i could care less if he was a dick a decade ago

Sorry, but it was personal. Funny how you want to backtrack like a Peegster. He wasn't a dick, he bit someone during a game. Having said that, it isn't my hire to make.

Posted on 4/11 12:39 PM | IP: Logged

He's the primary recruiter for Ronnie Johnson, I know that.

Posted on 4/11 12:39 PM | IP: Logged

Then i apologize,

As to Fife, how am i backtracking

Not on Fife, you are welcome to your opinion. BTW, thanks for the apology, many on here aren't that mature. :)

Honestly, everyone is already standing and cheering the team and coaches, are some really going to stop or even worse boo when he is announced?

Posted on 4/11 12:50 PM | IP: Logged

I probably am not.

Posted on 4/11 1:15 PM | IP: Logged

nt

Posted on 4/11 1:18 PM | IP: Logged

Well I didn't mean I would boo, take it more as to how strange it all would be. Who would've ever thought, should this all come to pass, that Dane Fife would be standing on the sideline in a black and gold tie helping Matt Painter take down the Hoosiers?

It's all sort of surreal.

Posted on 4/11 2:28 PM | IP: Logged

not to be mean, but just because I spent years hating and booing him every time his name is announced. It may take a game or two to get that out of my muscle memory.

Posted on 4/11 3:07 PM | IP: Logged

they're yelling "former HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOsier". tic

Sports sometimes makes strange bedfellows. This would be one of those times.

Posted on 4/11 3:30 PM | IP: Logged

Jim McMahon played qb for the Packers. Johnny Damon played for the Red Sox and Yankees. Rick Pitino coached Kentucky and Louisville. Like just about everything else, $$ motivate individuals in sports.

Posted on 4/11 3:36 PM | IP: Logged

And Rodman played for the Bulls.

Posted on 4/11 3:54 PM | IP: Logged

he went from Wabash to DePauw? talking out going from the outhouse to the penthouse. interesting transition though.

Posted on 4/11 4:03 PM | IP: Logged

"They're not booing you sir they're saying Boooorns."

Oh The Simpsons
