It is not only that the renovated Mackey Arena does not match O$U. It will have the second smallest seating capacity in the Big Ten. Much money is being spent to put office, training facilities and resources for other sports in to a larger shell for the old arena, but Purdue, long behind, is lagging seriously in the basketball facilities race.

Google Mizzou Arena read the description on the Wikipedia site and the Missouri Sports Web site. Look at the photos. Missouri cared enough about basketball to spend $75,000,000 to open this new arena in 2004. (And that money was all for basketball, not to house other sports resources.) It seats 15,061 and they fill it. It appears to have all of the comforts and amenities that Mackey will have and probably a few more, but it had them years sooner.

Not only has Missouri built an arena with larger seating capacity and built it sooner, but Missouri appears willing to pay more to its head coach and assistants than Purdue. If Purdue goes on the cheap for facilities and coaching salaries, what do you think it does on the recruiting budget? Tell me in what area of basketball commitment does Purdue's AD and administration even come close to competing with the vast majority of elite basketball programs?

Burke has already locked us into a smaller, redone old arena. (While I love Mackey and have since attending the dedication game there in 1967, today's kids are more likely to be impressed by newer and larger arenas.) I hope that Painter is causing Burke to wake up and get to the top of the game in other ways of supporting a coaching staff that is striving to be the best. Otherwise, the decline of Purdue basketball that Matt Painter managed to reverse for a while, despite the lack of commitment from Purdue, will resume.
