Morgan Burke and Nancy Cross did fly to Akron today. Akron is near Kent State. We have yet to be able to absolutely pin down that they met with Golden Flashes coach Darrell Hazell, and we're not crazy about throwing it out there that Purdue met with Hazell just because there was a flight to the general vicinity of said coach.

However, we do have a coaching source telling us that he received a call today from an assistant coach at Kent specifically asking about the Purdue job, so that would be quite a coincidence if today's flight to Northeast Ohio wasn't Hazell-related. That same coach received a follow-up call from that same Golden Flash coach this evening asking more questions about Purdue.

A source told us tonight Hazell is "in play" for Purdue.

One thing to take particular note of: This was Purdue going to the coach, not the coach coming to Purdue. If Purdue did meet with Hazell today, one would think it would not be a formal interview. You'd think that would occur on campus.

But not always.

When Purdue did its interviews when it hired Hope, it hosted at least three candidates in the same day at a secure location in Indianapolis, not on campus.

Hazell fielded a visit from Boston College prior to the MAC championship game, which Kent State lost in overtime to Northern Illinois. Hazell is also considered a candidate for the California job.

He is a former Ohio State assistant, so his Big Ten ties run deep, but he's also an East Coast native, making Boston College a logical school to really come at him.

Hopefully Nancy Cross doesn't tell him about how we don't donate enough money.

this would be a betrayal of everything Burke said about keeping the cradle and having a fun exciting offense...

You mean running crazy turnover-prone plays on 3rd and goal from the 1 in OT of a conference championship game isn't fun and exciting?  That call alone should keep Hazell out of play for Purdue!

We're kind of missing the all-important question here; is his wife hot? Lastly, does he have a position regarding butch dykes?

FYI, NC State did the same thing with Doeren ... flew to him.  I'm pretty sure reports say that he hadn't even visited Raleigh before they reached their agreement.  Of course, he went from $400K to $1.8M per year ... who needs a tour when you more than quadruple your income?  Lol

PS, don't worry about Hazell's play call.  Remember, Tiller blew a call to cost his team the championship (took a safety, blah, blah, blah).  Point is, Hazell's team had no business beating NIU ... and almost did it, anyway.

DeRuyter and Hazell are the up-and-comers.  Neither would be a bad get.

I predict Jones goes to CU because they throw a little more money his way and Purdue ends up with Hazell and pays he and his staff under the 4.5 million mark. Purdue then ends up looking like a genius because Hazell and his staff bring in some very good recruiting classes, do a good job developing the players, and his enthusiasm and likeability energize the fan base. Meanwhile, Jones finds it difficult to recruit players to keep pace with USC, UCLA, Stanford, and Oregon and in five years CU's gone to one lower-tier bowl game and he's let go.

If we save money on Hazell we need to pay for top assistants, especially a stud OC

Who said he is "our" number one Target? He sure is not mine although I will support whoever is hired.

Yeah, when I say "our", I mean Purdue University.  The number one target for "us" is chosen by the AD.

You can't be arrogant enough to think that anybody actually cares who your personal number one target is.

Yeah, Burke is putting a torch to the cradle. I have ni idea as to what kind of offense Hazell prefers but it looks as if he knows how to win. Anyone that sets a style of play as a criteria for selection of Purdue's next coach is misguided. Just win, baby.

Just a suggestion...can we drop the negative references to Nancy? She's one of the nicest, most sincere people you'll ever meet and has done more for Purdue athletics than any of us will ever do. She sent out an ill advised letter (that probaly wasn't inaccurate) during a time of stress. Let it go.

Give it a rest.  Ms. Cross wrote one VERY stupid letter in her 30+ years in Purdue Athletics. That's not enough to continually bash her.

Andrew Luck came from a hard-nosed program at Stanford that ran the ball a lot between the tackles.  Danny Etling, et al can shine in that type of program.  It's not based upon gimmicks, rather fundamental football.  But it only works with outstanding recruiting as you need the right personnel on the field.  Again using Stanford as an example, their O-line was stacked under Harbaugh and continues to be under Shaw.  Wisconsin established a sustainable football model under Alvarez years ago.  Perhaps Hazell can replicate this.  In any event, great QBs can shine on any good team.  Bad teams need more creative - but at the end of the day they're still bad teams.  I think we need the best coach available regardless of style.  I don't know if that is Hazell or someone else, but I do like what he did with Kent State.

Spot on we need to be able to run the ball first (like our first 4 and last three games) then pass.

Also, add on that Morgan all but admitted that he wrote it and she was the poor soul who had her name placed on it before the email went out.

It's a great thought IF we could get those horses.  Where are we going to recruit those guys from.  Wisc breeds them across the state and they go directly to Madison and then 1 or 2 a year to the NFL.

Totally agree with this assessment.  It's all about winning and not necessarily being flashy when you do it.  Build a strong foundation with your line play and go from there.

BTW, boilerdoug, you are now in your 12th year on these boards and this was only your third post?  That is truly remarkable.  You need to post more often.

@GoldandBlackcom: A #Purdue source suggests Purdue could get word on Kent State coach Darrell Hazell even sooner than Wednesday.

Does taking cheap shots at people who were misunderstood and who have long since apologized, make you feel good about yourself?  Nancy Cross has done more for Purdue (unpaid)  than you ever will.  Like any person, she has her faults.  But stating a plain fact - that with additional support - maybe Purdue wouldn't have been in the situation it was with Painter -  is not something that should be criticized.  Especially from the same KH crowd that bitches constantly about that same fan base.  Her comments were not aimed at the JPC, but at people who criticize but fail to support efforts to make things better or who give only token support.  No doubt, JPC donations follow the 80/20 rule.  Twenty percent give 80 percent of the money. The other 80 percent who give 20 percent of the money are often the ones bitching the loudest.  I realize that not everyone can be a substantial contributor and so does she and her remarks were not aimed at them.  So in short, why don't you let it go and instead, send a check to Morgan Burke and wish him the best in hiring our next coach?  Even a token amount as a goodwill gesture is appreciated.  I can assure you of that.
