Welcome to "BOILING OVER," GoldandBlack.com's weekly Ultimate Ticket information-clearinghouse and analysis column meant for our subscribers and our subscribers only.

We appreciate everyone's cooperation in helping us keep what is sometimes delicate information confined to this message board.

We certainly don't want it to come to this, but if there are problems, subscriptions have and will be canceled over this.

We know there are a lot of blogs out there and a lot of you are on Twitter and other message boards, and we don't want to come off like Darth Vader here, but we would be doing all our subscribers a disservice if weren't proactive about protecting the value of their subscription. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

In the past week, we've talked so much about "fluid" situations. Well, here's another one for you: After the Indiana game, prep school linebacker Sam Lebbie apparently committed to Purdue.

A day later, the coach he committed to was fired.

Yesterday, the coach he'd now be playing for was hired.

This month, Lebbie will have to prepare to enroll wherever he goes mid-year.

Darrell Hazell has no staff in place yet.

Purdue's remaining coaches have continued to recruit Lebbie and taken steps to get him ready to enroll early.

Lebbie is a teammate of defensive tackle commit Ra'Zahn Howard at Atlanta Sports Academy, though it remains to be seen whether he'll stick with Purdue through its transition. Howard says he has offers from Nebraska, Georgia and Penn State among others. He didn't make the visit to Connecticut he said he was going to make this weekend, but said he'll take it soon.

Hazell seemed to indicate last night that one of his first priorities will be to make sure all the 2013 commitments are solid, though without his staff in place to help, he's going to have to rely on the interim staff largely to assist with that. (BN)

Regarding staffing news, Hazell made it clear last night there's no timetable for hires, and there was no indication any coaches would automatically be coming with him.

We can tell you this: Hazell will consider all of his Kent State coaches and all of the remaining Purdue coaches first, but there are no guarantees. Hazell has been directed to put together the best staff he can get and apparently given the resources enough to make a compelling case. So this might not be a case where a new coach comes in and you know he's bringing X number of coaches with him.

We have had multiple people who've covered or known Hazell tell us they'd be surprised if former Ohio State linebacker Marcus Freeman didn't come with him in some capacity from Kent State, but Freeman is still pretty young, so we'll see.

We do know that Arkansas assistant head coach and linebackers coach Taver Johnson, a former Ohio State assistant while Hazell was with the Buckeyes, is a target for the Purdue staff. But he could be retained by Bret Bielema with the Razorbacks, so that remains to be seen.

The possibility exists, some believe, that Hazell could at least test the waters on bringing former Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Heacock out of retirement. His son, Jon, has been the coordinator at Kent State and is the former head coach at Youngstown State. He's obviously a possibility for Purdue as well, provided he's not tabbed as Hazell's successor at Kent State. Ohio folks believe Luke Fickell will be targeted first for that job.

The advantage Hazell has is that he should have a vast network to draw from. The Ohio State coaching tree is enormous and Jim Tressel is expected to play at least some role in helping Hazell assemble his first Purdue staff.

One thing that is very obvious is that Hazell's potential to assemble a high-caliber staff due to his connections from major programs was a huge check in his favor over other candidates.

So we'd expect a heavy Ohio State influence and many ties to Ohio in general. But keep in mind the importance of recruiting in these decisions, also. Hazell will probably need coaches with ties to whatever southern or eastern population centers he's going to want to target in recruiting. (BN)

Sonny Dykes was initially a coach Purdue was very interested in as it initiated the search that concluded with Hazell's hiring. We're told, though, that that interest quickly went by the wayside on Purdue's end and its pursuit of the now-former Louisiana Tech coach fizzled out pretty quickly.

Dykes was hired at Cal yesterday.

The search, as we reported beforehand, boiled down to Butch Jones, Tim DeRuyter and Willie Taggart prior to Purdue visiting with Hazell and moving in that direction. (BN)
