Welcome to "BOILING OVER," GoldandBlack.com's weekly Ultimate Ticket information-clearinghouse and analysis column meant for our subscribers and our subscribers only.

We appreciate everyone's cooperation in helping us keep what is sometimes delicate information confined to this message board.

We certainly don't want it to come to this, but if there are problems, subscriptions have and will be canceled over this.

We know there are a lot of blogs out there and a lot of you are on Twitter and other message boards, and we don't want to come off like Darth Vader here, but we would be doing all our subscribers a disservice if weren't proactive about protecting the value of their subscription. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Cornerback TyVel Jemison is no longer being considered a Purdue commitment, as we figured to be the case after his official visit this past weekend was called off. That is never a good sign.

You'll recall Jemison - of Bishop Luers in Fort Wayne - said throughout the season he was basically committed to committing to Purdue, but his grades needed serious work.

Recall how reluctant we were to count him toward Purdue's commitment list? There was a reason for that.

We'll see if maybe he is a prep school or JUCO option for the Boilermakers down the road.

As for defensive tackle Ra'Zahn Howard, who didn't make the grade to transfer mid-season, he's still a possibility, but nothing is set in stone. (BN)

Football recruiting review …

The following players will officially visit this weekend: defensive tackle Johnny Daniels, tight end Garrett Hudson, wide receiver Deangelo Yancey, corners Shon Akins and Da'Wan Hunte and offensive lineman Jason Tretter.

At this point, we'd be shocked if Daniels didn't commit, as Purdue looks to keep adding linemen to its 2013 class. If Tretter is offered, he'll almost certainly commit, as well. Provided Hunte has an offer, we'd think there would be a good shot there as well.

As for the others, we don't know enough yet about Yancey or Akins to know where they are with things, but will reiterate: Every recruit who visits at this stage of the calendar is a commitment possibility. Both those guys do have offers, though.

With Hudson, he'd seem like an obvious commitment, but he does not yet have an offer. He's the son of new defensive coordinator Greg Hudson and a tight end. Whether he's being recruited as such, we can only assume.

But this upcoming weekend will be just like last weekend, where you can expect another run on commitments.

Purdue got two immediate commitments of this past weekend, as linebacker Dezwan Polk and Antoine Miles popped, then tight end Matt Burke followed shortly thereafter.

Of those remaining among the uncommitted who visited, that leaves just receiver Dan Monteroso, tight end Nate Wozniak and athlete Khoury Crenshaw.

Purdue has a great shot with Monteroso, a great shot, with long-standing relationships at Purdue probably giving it a leg up on Maryland, where he's visiting right now. Crenshaw indicated to us he has an offer, but has otherwise been unreachable. Don't know what's going on there, but other recruits have told us he has track options, too, Michigan being one of them.

As for Wozniak, he has been down to Purdue and Miami forever. But if the 6-foot-9 senior from Center Grove is actually being recruited for tight end instead of as a lineman, the Hurricanes are almost certainly out. They signed one of the top junior college tight ends nationally as a mid-year transfer, as well as an additional tight end to enroll in the fall.

The likelihood of Miami, which could be facing scholarship reductions if the NCAA could ever get out of its own way and conduct an investigation without embarrassing itself, signing three tight ends in a class is minimal.

That said, Purdue just picked up a tight end also in Burke.

By our count, Purdue has 14 commitments/signings right now, meaning it'll be down to just a few spots if it picks up X number of commitments this weekend. The class is filling up. (BN)

Cam Cameron already knew Danny Etling was "special."

He'd first gotten a call from a friend about five, six years ago telling him there was a quarterback coming up the ranks to Terre Haute South, Cameron's alma mater, soon.

Cameron had to see for himself, so he met a then-eighth grade Etling. Soon thereafter, he formed a bond with the youngster and has served as a mentor ever since. Cameron said he's watched all of Etling's games on tape.

It was last summer, though, that Cameron got to see first-hand in an extended visit what Etling could do. Cameron and his son, also named Danny, and Etling went to the Manning Passing Academy where Cameron was able to spend four days watching Etling.

"Fundamentally, he's technically sound. There's not a whole lot I can help him with at this point, other than to encourage him," Cameron said Wednesday. "The coaches at Purdue, he needs to learn their system and what they want to do. His mechanics are sound. My input to him is, 'Listen to your coaches, keep working hard,' and just communicate with him.

"He's a pretty good athlete, he's tough, a hard worker, can throw a football, smart. I think players will really respond to him. He's got a unique way in the way he leads." (SC)

Kendall Stephens underwent successful shoulder surgery Tuesday in Chicago.

(Hey, how often do we ever tell you, "Yeah they butchered the poor kid"?)

There was a bit of good news, we're told, in that the labrum did not sustain an upper tear as first thought, just a lower tear. We have no idea what that means in terms of recovery, but just passing along.

Estimated recovery time is six months, but any doctor or person who plays a doctor on TV will tell you that every recovery is different.

Stephens begins physical therapy in two weeks. (BN)

Just to editorialize on our trip to see Vince Edwards on Friday …

It's difficult to imagine an uncommitted player being more committed than Edwards is with Purdue.

If you read our story and watched the accompanying video, that is pretty well reflected. We do our best not to steer recruits toward gushing about Purdue; he just offered it all up.

Want to make this crystal clear: There are no black helicopters here.

The family from the outset set a plan to commit at a certain time and they are sticking to it just out of principle.

It has nothing to do with any waffling feelings about Purdue, any division in the household or anything like that. That much is very clear.

Yes, Michigan is recruiting him, and we have no idea where all the pro-Wolverine buzz on the Internet came from. But if it was reality, then why in the world would Edwards have said what he said when we talked with him in Middletown? Before doing the video, we suggested he take off the Purdue hat his mother special ordered for him as a Christmas present before going on video? He didn't want to.

And again, if Edwards were so eager to go to Michigan, then you'd think he'd have gotten to Ann Arbor by now, scheduling issues be damned.

So there you go. (BN)

Purdue coach Matt Painter on signee Basil Smotherman, who he's seen play in person now twice in the past few weeks: "He's made some progress. He played a lot harder in the game I saw him (vs. Pike) than in the game last year. That was a pleasant surprise. He's just playing harder, doing a better job of shooting shots in rhythm, for the most part. He's just competing and that's great to see because he has a great body, can be a great defender and play that combo forward spot and (create) matchups there. … I'm excited for him to get here next year." (staff)

On the football coaching staff, there is not much to report, other than the continued message being given to recruits that the staff should be finalized soon and that recruits are putting their faith in Hazell to get the right guys.

We expect Jappy Oliver to be named the new defensive line coach, as we've already reported. We are sticking with expect from here on out with this stuff since it's been so fluid.

But if Oliver happens, that would leave two spots left to fill: Offensive coordinator/quarterbacks and tight ends/special teams, assuming that's how they'll be broken down.

Things have drawn out here and as you've read, Hazell's said it's about due diligence and not a lack of options. But it sounds like Purdue has been very selective. A premium was placed very early on after Hazell's hiring on "all-star" coaches.

Looking at the calendar, if Hazell doesn't have coaches lined up already, then this week could be significant though recruiting travel is back in full swing.

The Senior Bowl in Mobile is the NFL's version of a job fair. The coaches looking for work now will be pushing themselves down there.

That'll tell the tale as to what options Purdue might have from the pro ranks after already targeting Matt Cavanaugh, who went to the Bears, for OC.

In the college ranks, there are presumably any number of guys out there who could be hired tomorrow, provided Hazell wants them.

We are only throwing out names here so please take it for whatever it's worth, but guys like Wyoming OC and former Bowling Green coach Gregg Brandon and former Colorado tight ends coach and Akron head coach J.D. Brookhart are guys who, on paper, would seem to make sense. They have solid resumes and have both been MAC head coaches in Ohio during the same time frame Hazell was at Ohio State.

Ball State's coordinator, Rich Skrosky, wouldn't fit the profile, but he just presided over a hell of a productive offense and he now has ties in Indiana. Warren Ruggiero at Bowling Green is an Ohio guy who coached Josh Freeman at Kansas State and Marques Colston at Hofstra. You never know. And the guy who just called the plays for the nation's top passing offense is a guy who knows Purdue, former Boilermaker coach Bill Legg, now the OC and quarterbacks coach at Marshall.

Massachusetts assistant Jeff Burris is a former Notre Dame player who knows the state, but he's a defensive coach and Purdue's full on D.

(Again, we are throwing out names here.)

Another point to reiterate: Hazell will not be his own offensive coordinator, but he won't detach himself from the offense, by any means. (BN)
