Perry hoping to go to next level with teammates
Memphis (Whitehaven), Tenn., wide receiver Gerald Perry was at Ole Miss recently, renewing acquaintances with Hugh Freeze, Maurice Harris and the rest of the Rebels' staff, several of whom he got to know last summer during a camp at Arkansas State.
The 5-foot-11, 162-pound Perry said he's "really close" with Harris, a former Memphis high school coach with strong ties to the Bluff City.
Perry is also very close with several of his teammates, including highly-regarded running back prospect Mark Dodson Jr.. In fact, Perry said he and Dodson could be part of a four-man package on the recruiting circuit.
"Me and Mark Dodson are real close," said Perry, who has an offer from Cincinnati in addition to interest from Ole Miss, Kentucky, Alabama and others. "We're like brothers. We do everything together. We're going to the same college and everything. (Darius Sims) is my boy, too. All of us _ me, Mark Dodson, Darius Sims and Vincent Hunter _ (plan to sign together)."
Dodson recently listed Ole Miss as his early leader. Perry didn't go that far, though he hinted the Rebels, thanks in large part to Harris' presence, would be difficult to beat.
"I just want to come here and get him to teach me - teach me how to be a better ballplayer and have him help me get to the next level," Perry said. "I'm not ready to make my final decision yet. I'm just trying to weigh my options now."
Perry said some schools are also interested in looking at him as a safety, something he's more than amenable to.
"I prefer safety because when the ball's in the air, I'm like a ball hawk, man," Perry said. "When the ball's in the air, I have to go get it."
