Cason waiting his turn

Tim Cason had about two weeks to finish an online calculus class, needing the credits so that he could enroll at Purdue for the spring semester.

Purdue, he says, wasn't expecting him to make the deadline.

"But I finished it," the Boilermaker cornerback commitment said Friday afternoon.

Still, Cason finds himself in a numbers crunch for spring enrollment, leaving him an early graduate of Clarkston High School but now without the ability to attend college classes. Purdue said Thursday that it wouldn't be able to take Cason for the spring. David Blough and Kirk Barron took two of the existing spots, with Cason slated for a third; but a current Purdue player, Cason says, is a credit short of graduation and needs to stay on scholarship.

"It is kind of disappointing, but right now I'm done with high school and there's nothing for me to do," he said.

But Cason will find ways to fill the time. He says he's been sitting around his Clarkston, Mich., house the last couple days - "I hate it"- looking at options. One possibility is to go to Arizona, where his uncle, Gregory Clopton, could help train him. Clopton is a former body builder who is familiar with the athletic training community in the Phoenix area.

"I could use this as a tool to get better," Cason said. "I talked to Coach (Darrell) Hazell and he said he's going to need me to come play in the fall, so I'm trying to make sure my body is ready and make sure I'm ready for the season."

Cason, who switched his commitment to Purdue from Western Michigan in early October, says he's looking forward to signing early next month. One of six defensive back commitments, the three-star, 6-foot, 180-pounder was hoping to get a jump on his career but he'll have to do so on his own for a few months.

"They want me to come down and stay a couple days, watch spring practice, things like that," he said of Hazell and Co. "Then, they want me to come (to school) in May."
