Florida WR ready to check out finalists

When Eric Williams didn't make it to Oxford, Miss., as planned Friday for an official visit, many Ole Miss assumed one of two things had happened.

Some figured that the 5-foot-10, ,192-pound wide receiver from Bradenton (Manatee), Fla., had knocked Ole Miss off his list of finalists. Others, meanwhile, wondered if Williams' non-presence in Oxford meant that the Rebels had landed one of their other wide receiver targets. After all, Ole Miss is heavily recruiting Kevin Norwood, Patrick Patterson, Chad Bumphis, Tyrece Gaines, Ja-Mes Logan and other wideouts, and there's no way the Rebels could possibly take them all in the most optimistic of scenarios.

However, Williams' failure to make it to Ole Miss this weekend was neither a sign of a lack of interest on his part or a lessening of interest on the Rebels' behalf.

"They're still in the mix," Williams said Sunday afternoon. "We just had some family issues. We haven't rescheduled yet, but it'll be soon."

Williams, a three-star speedster ranked by Rivals.com as the nation's No. 97 wide receiver prospect, will visit Purdue this weekend. He's hoping to visit Ole Miss shortly thereafter before making a decision. He holds offers from UAB, Nebraska, South Florida, South Carolina and others, but he appears to be getting close to a decision.

"It's down to Purdue and Ole Miss," Williams said. "It'll be out of those two."

Williams has never seen the campuses in West Lafayette, Ind., or Oxford, so the decision, he said, could come down to the feel he gets once he checks out those locales.

"I just want to see what the atmosphere is like," Williams said.
