Hagen leaving for IU

The longest-tenured member of Purdue's football coaching staff is leaving.

Mark Hagen, who joined the Boilermakers before their Rose Bowl season in 2000 and spent the past 10 seasons in West Lafayette, has taken a job at Indiana, GoldandBlack.com and Rivals.com's Tom Dienhart have learned.

Hagen is a former All-Big Ten linebacker for IU, where he played for Coach Bill Mallory. Mallory's son, Doug, was hired to be co-defensive coordinator for new Hoosier coach Kevin Wilson.

Purdue's linebackers coach the past two season, Hagen will coach IU's defensive line and special teams.

After first coming on board in 2000 to coach defensive tackles, Hagen also coached Purdue's special teams from 2003-'08. His Purdue biography bills his "effect on special teams" as "nothing short of miraculous."

Hagen coached linebackers for the Boilermakers in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2010.

He was also Joe Tiller's assistant head coach from 2005-2008, prior to the transition from Tiller to current head coach Danny Hope.

The coach responsible for recruiting Indiana and Chicago, Hagen was one of Purdue's most accomplished recruiters.

Last recruiting season alone, he led the recruitment of defensive tackles Bruce Gaston and Ryan Isaac, each of whom played as a freshmen; linebacker Joe Gilliam and quarterback Sean Robinson, two of the class' highest-regarded players; plus wide receiver Charles Torwudzo and corner Antoine Lewis.

Among some of the other names Hagen led the recruiting effort for in his decade at Purdue: Ryan Baker, Curtis Painter, Joey Elliott, Anthony Spencer, Mike Otto, Stanford Keglar, Bernard Pollard, Rob Ninkovich, Desmond Tardy, Alex Magee, Mike Neal, Jason Werner, Joe Holland, Ryan Kerrigan, Albert Evans, Kawann Short and Nick Mondek.

Hagen was one of six coaches who either were or would have been retained by Hope upon his ascension to head coach following the 2008 season.
