Hammons commits

Oak Hill Academy center A.J. Hammons committed to Purdue Thursday night, according to his AAU coach, Jared Quarles.

The 7-foot big man was one of Purdue's top remaining targets for its 2012 signing class, joining Rapheal Davis, Jay Simpson and Ronnie Johnson. Purdue will now look to add heralded guard Gary Harris as the fifth and final piece to that class.

Hammons, who was unavailable for immediate comment, is ranked as the nation's 18th-best center and the No. 123 prospect overall in the '12 class by Rivals.com.

Formerly of Carmel High School and a native of Gary, Hammons spent his junior season at Oak Hill and will return there for his senior season.

Hammons chose Purdue over a final list that also included Cincinnati, Minnesota and Dayton. Wake Forest also recruited him, as did many others.
