Smith third at three-point contest

Purdue senior Ryne Smith fell just one point shy of a berth in the final round of Thursday night's three-point shootout contest at the Final Four in New Orleans.

Northwestern's John Shurna won the event, making his final seven shots to edge Temple's Juan Fernandez 21-20.

Fernandez earned a spot in the one-on-one final with Shurna by scoring a 19 in the semifinal, one better than Smith's 18.

Brittany Rayburn's stay in the contest on the women's side lasted one round, as the 10 points she scored right off the bat weren't enough to get her into the semifinals.

There's a strong Purdue presence in New Orleans.

Tomorrow, in the late afternoon, the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced, with Robbie Hummel, who's in New Orleans, being a front-runner.
