July tips off
Today marks the start of the NCAA's newly shortened July evaluation period, with Wednesday through Sunday of this month serving as the first of three windows for college coaches to attend AAU events.
In years past, evaluation periods were spread throughout the July. This year, they're all condensed within the final three weeks of the month: July 11-15, July 18-22 and July 25-29.
Four tournaments of particular interest to Purdue will be played relatively close to campus during this week's first evaluation window.
Here is a quick breakdown:
The massive adidas Invitational in Indianapolis will include the Eric Gordon All-Star and Indiana Elite programs that have a number of Boilermaker prospects, as well as the Spiece Indy Heat team that includes several of the state's top Class of 2015 players.
In the 17-and-under division, Gordon has Purdue 2013 commitment Basil Smotherman, who'll be playing despite injuring his foot last week at Purdue's team camp in West Lafayette.
The EG 16-and-under team features a number of 2014 prospects Purdue's shown interest in, including Sam Logwood, Bryant McIntosh, Sean Sellers and Jacob Johnson.
Its 2015 Central Stars team includes Eron Gordon, a 2016 bound for North Central in the fall who already has early offers from Purdue and Indiana.
Indiana Elite's 16-year-old team has Chicago's Paul Turner, who holds a Purdue offer and its 15s team is headlined by East Chicago point guard Hyron Edwards, who's been offered by the Boilermakers, as well.
Jim Reamer's Spiece 2015 team includes notable Purdue prospects of interest Gary Bonds, Derrik Smits, K.J. Walton and Bronson Kessinger, among others.
Also, the Atlanta Celtics 2014 team is expected to have recently offered big man Jabari Craig.
The adidas Invitational is based out of North Central High School but reaches north into Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville and Westfield.
The Chicago Summer Challenge at Riverside-Brookfield High School is headlined by the Illinois Wolves, with their 17-and-under team featuring Purdue commitment Kendall Stephens and its 16s including top Boilermaker target Keita Bates-Diop.
Bates-Diop's 16-and-under team will be playing up in the 17s division.
The Wolves' 15-and-under team - playing up in the 16s bracket - includes Jordan Ash, who was offered by Purdue in the spring.
In Waukegan, Ill., Purdue 2014 target Vince Edwards and his King James Shooting Stars team will play in the King James Summer Showcase, originating from the Waukegan Field House.
Also playing in Waukegan will be Purdue 2014 prospect Sean O'Mara with his IBA Select-Muscle Milk team.
Furthest north is the Baylor Youth D1 Elite tournament, to be held in Pleasant Prairie, Wis.
This tournament will include Purdue 2014 big man target Tyler Wideman and his Meanstreets 16-and-under team.
Boilermaker 2013 commitment Bryson Scott will not be playing during the month's first evaluation window, as his Spiece Indy Heat team won't be in action until the Nike Peach Jam July 18-21. This week, too many team members are occupied with other Nike-sponsored events.
