Rookies could get chance in Week 1; Sunday notes

Purdue is into its game week prep with the opener against Eastern Kentucky looming on Saturday.

Coach Danny Hope thinks a couple of freshmen could make appearances in Week 1.

Hope mentioned receivers Cameron Posey and Danny Anthrop, defensive back Anthony Brown, defensive lineman Ryan Watson and kickers Paul Griggs and Thomas Meadows.

Hope has talked about Posey and Anthrop often throughout training camp, calling Posey a "natural" and referring to Anthrop as a sure-handed player who also could get some carries from the slot.

With a deep defensive line, though, led by Kawann Short, Bruce Gaston, Brandon Taylor, Ryan Isaac, Jalani Phillips and Ryan Russell, Watson could seem to get buried.

But Hope said Watson has really showed up in recent practices.

"For what we're trying to get done with the grand scheme of things, different packages that include different defensive linemen per package, there is a place for Ryan Watson," Hope said. "So I wouldn't be surprised for him to play in first game this season. He's really done a great job, particularly in the last half-dozen practices where he's become more comfortable with what's around him and the speed of the game. He's very, very tough and plays with great leverage. He can play the strong end position for us some maybe or possibly he can go down inside."

Although not a freshman, newcomer Greg Latta also was mentioned as someone who should play in his first year at Purdue, Hope said.

Nearly set
Hope said there are only a couple starting spots still not settled, listing left tackle as one.

Kevin Pamphile and Justin Kitchens have both worked with the first-team offense there this fall. Pamphile started camp with the 1s, and Kitchens' name has only surfaced as a potential starter in the last week or so.

Hope isn't "100-percent sure" about right guard. Devin Smith seems to have an edge over Cody Davis, who can play all three inside spots.

Defensively, the starters will depend on which personnel package Purdue starts the game in.

Hope said paperwork needs to still be finished, among other things, before the scholarships of Jordan Shine and Mike Lee can be redistributed. Neither Shine nor Lee passed his physical and won't play football at Purdue.
