Burke on Notre Dame
Wednesday afternoon, it was announced that Notre Dame is joining the ACC in all sports but football.
But as part of the move, the Irish will now play five games per season against ACC opponents in football, triggering questions about the future of the Fighting Irish program's long-standing Big Ten rivalries.
It has been reported that Notre Dame might be inclined to protect its long-standing series with USC, Stanford and Navy over Midwest rivalries such as Purdue, Michigan and Michigan State in future schedule.
Purdue does have an agreement with Notre Dame through 2021.
Wednesday, athletic director Morgan Burke issued the following the statement.
"I wouldn't expect today's announcement to affect us. We have a long-time relationship with Notre Dame involving many of our programs, and we expect it to continue. You have two schools in the state of Indiana with shared values - their close proximity is a mutual benefit when it comes to travel and potential missed class time by the student-athletes - so it only makes sense that we will continue to compete against them."
