Boilermakers may be on the verge of a hire

According to report by ESPN's Brett McMurphy, Kent State coach Darrell Hazell has emerged as Purdue's top candidate for its vacant head coaching position and a decision is expected Wednesday.

A Purdue source told GoldandBlack.com this afternoon word on Hazell could come even sooner.

The Kent State coach is believed to have received a visit Monday from a delegation of Purdue officials. Since then, he's trended upward as a focal point of the Boilermakers' search.

Hazell led the Golden Flashes to an 11-2 record, including a win at ranked Rutgers and a narrow overtime loss to Northern Illinois in the MAC title game.

The former Ohio State assistant coach is believed to have fielded interest from Boston College, but is not mentioned among reported finalists for that job, which is expected to be announced today.

He also reportedly interviewed with California, which is expected to be filled very soon.

Purdue hosted Cincinnati coach Butch Jones, but he is no longer considering the Boilermaker job.
