Simpson sidelined

Freshman forward Jay Simpson will miss the remainder of the season due to lingering problems with the foot he broke in the spring, Purdue announced Tuesday evening, two hours before its game against Ball State.

The 6-foot-8 big man has played in all 10 games thus far and averaged 2.9 points and 2.4 rebounds in about seven-and-a-half minutes per game.

According to Purdue's announcement, Simpson will be "eligible to seek a medical hardship waiver."

"Jay has made every effort to rehab his foot in order to continue to contribute on the court this season, but it hasn't come along as quickly as we would have liked," Coach Matt Painter said in a released statement. "The most important thing for Jay right now is to get completely healthy so this injury doesn't remain a problem down the road."

Simpson was the subject of redshirt talk in the preseason after he broke his foot in the spring and enrolled weighing roughly 280 pounds. He missed most of the Boilermakers' practice work in advance of their exhibition tour of Italy, then did not play in any of the games overseas.

Painter said he would redshirt Simpson if he didn't meet his goal of getting down to 240 pounds by the start of the season.

The freshman from Champaign, Ill., met that goal.

Though he has played sparingly, in part due to remaining conditioning concerns, Painter has remained committed to playing Simpson, the most offensively skilled post player on the roster.

Prior to the season, Painter called Simpson Purdue's "most talented player."
