Assistant football salaries are up

Morgan Burke vowed to offer a commitment to the football program, and that is showing up in the salaries of Darrell Hazell's assistant coaches.

The contracts of offensive coordinator John Shoop, defensive coordinator Greg Hudson and the rest of the assistants, Jim Bollman, Marcus Freeman, Jafar Williams, Kevin Sherman and Jon Heacock have been completed.

In 2012, football assistant coaches' base salaries were $1.61 million. Of the seven who have been hired for 2013, they're set to make $1,695,000. Hazell still is looking to hire a defensive line coach and likely a tight ends coach/special teams coordinator.

Shoop's $400,000 base salary leads the group. Hudson is next at $395,000. That's nearly $800,000 for the coordinators, about $350,000 more than Gary Nord and Tim Tibesar combined for in 2012.

New offensive line coach Bollman will make $240,000. Sherman, the receivers coach, will make $220,000. Heacock is at $200,000. The least-experienced coaches, linebackers coach Freeman and running backs coach Williams, have salaries of $120,000 each. Freeman, Williams and Heacock coached under Hazell at Kent State.

All of the assistants also have bonuses in the contracts for academic performance, Big Ten division finish, a conference championship game victory and bowl appearances. For example, if Purdue makes it to the Rose Bowl or a BCS game, the coach will get 15 percent of his salary, compared to 5 percent for the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. Depends on the game.
