Anthrop lost to injury during scrimmage
Purdue's end-of-camp jersey scrimmage Saturday afternoon in Ross-Ade Stadium came at a price, as Danny Anthrop was lost to what appeared to be a significant knee injury.
Coach Darrell Hazell said he'd know more about the sophomore wide receiver's status in the next day or so, but the injury appeared serious and required that Anthrop immediately be carted off the field.
"I feel horrible for him," Hazell said. "The kid has worked so hard to put himself in position to be one of our guys."
The play happened with the fourth-team offense on the field, when walk-on QB Erich Berzinskas handed Anthrop the ball on an inside handoff. Corner Phil Taylor hit Anthrop - a fundamentally sound tackle - near the line of scrimmage.
It was immediately apparent Anthop had suffered an injury.
In addition to the disappointment of the circumstances for Anthrop is the fact that the Boilermaker wide receivers corps has apparently suffered another blow, as Anthrop's injury comes just days after freshman receiver Dan Monteroso broke his collarbone.
Monteroso underwent surgery Saturday morning and looks to be sidelined six weeks or so, Hazell said.
Fellow receiver B.J. Knauf struggled to describe the emotions after the scrimmage Saturday.
"People behind them are really, really going to have to step up," he said. "I can't really say who it's going to be."
The Boilermakers top three receivers remain: Dolapo Macarthy, B.J. Knauf and Shane Mikesky, but the depth is hurt. Now, only veteran Gary Bush and freshman DeAngelo Yancey seem like sure-fire contributors. Cameron Posey is potentially in line to get more time.
Knauf said it was difficult to watch a teammate be injured during a scrimmage.
"It's weird going into (a scrimmage) without much worries, just worrying about your assignments and then something like that," he said. "Dan goes down (Thursday) and Danny today, it's a shocker. We're all getting used to it really quick and really trying to find a way to step up and help the team more than before."
