Merrillville slips past Lake Central with title on line

ST. JOHN, Ind. - Merrillville High School continued its run of dominance of Lake Central Friday night win a a 20-17 victory, the Pirates' 16th straight over the Indians.

D.J. Wilkins, a Purdue Class of 2016 basketball target, threw three touchdowns and completed a critical late fourth-down pass, to lead a Merrillville offense that largely neutralized Boilermaker commitment Gelen Robinson with its play selection. Unofficially, Robinson finished with five tackles and a pass broken up.

Lake Central (6-2) had plenty of opportunities throughout the game, but ultimately couldn't overcome three turnovers, numerous harmful penalties and the 69- and 61-yard touchdowns Wilkins threw in the first half.

Merrillville (7-1) clinched at least a share of the Duneland Athletic Conference championship with the win, improving to 7-0 in the league.
