Everything changes but result; instant impressions
Purdue looked much different Saturday against Nebraska.
The result, however, did not, as the Cornhuskers rolled, 44-7.
In front of a crowd that may have been as much as half Nebraska fans, very little went right for the Boilermakers in their fifth loss in six games this season, their first following last weekend's bye.
It took a 55-yard bomb from Danny Etling to DeAngelo Yancey with 39 seconds left for Purdue to avoid its first shutout since 2010.
In his first start, Danny Etling was 14-of-35 for 184 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. Purdue managed just 32 rushing yards, more than 200 fewer than the 'Huskers.
Some instant impressions ...
Purdue came out with an entirely different look, running five wide receivers on offense to open the game and three down linemen on defense.
Four true freshmen - receiver Dan Monteroso, who started, and defensive linemen Ra'Zahn Howard, Jake Replogle and Evan Panfil debuted, along with Etling making his first start.
So, obviously, Purdue was willing to try anything and everything.
Obviously, though, it didn't result in, well, results.
Purdue was fortunate to be down just 21-0 at halftime, as Nebraska dropped a long touchdown on one drive and threw an interception in the end zone following a Boilermaker turnover on another.
Even with B.J. Knauf suspended, Purdue seemed to tighten its rotation at wide receiver, where the majority of the snaps were played by Monteroso, DeAngelo Yancey, Shane Mikesky and Cameron Posey, and some Bilal Marshall.
Danny Anthrop and Gary Bush didn't play 'til the second half and Dolapo Macarthy wasn't in full uniform due to injury.
Nebraska was only credited officially with five sacks, but it seemed like nearly double that, with Nebraska's pressure consistently getting to Etling and preying on his inexperience, maybe never more so than when the QB backtracked into the end zone and got brought down for a safety.
