Purdue-Iowa: Instant impressions

Iowa rushed for 311 yards and controlled the game on the ground as it pulled away in the second half Saturday, beating Purdue 38-14.

The Boilermakers trailed 14-7 at halftime after breaking a run of back-to-back shutouts with a second-quarter touchdown, set up by a fumbled punt.

But Iowa's running game not only extended the lead after halftime but also salted the game away, as the Hawkeyes secured bowl eligibility and the Boilermakers dropped their seventh game in a row.

Some instant impressions from the game …

Just another example of the physicality deficit Purdue's experiencing against Big Ten opponents. Iowa just dominated the line of scrimmage on offense.

The run set up big plays in the passing game. Jake Rudock threw for 191 yards and two scores on just 12 completions.

Austin Appleby played the final minutes for Purdue and hit Danny Anthrop for a 44-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown.

Obviously the offense didn't tear it up, but Etling was solid, showing, for one thing, some poise and courage, hanging in and making throws before getting hit, including the two-yard touchdown to Kurt Freytag.

Etling finished 15-of-28 for 145 yards and a touchdown, with no interceptions.

Biggest play of the game may have been running back Raheem Mostert's fumble in Iowa territory in the third quarter, to which Iowa responded with a 71-yard scoring drive, all of those yards coming via the run. The swing took Iowa from up seven to up 14 and denied the Boilermakers a prime scoring opportunity.
