Instant impression: Purdue-Illinois

Purdue had its chances in its 20-16 loss to Illinois Saturday, but couldn't capitalize on any of them.

The Boilermakers turned four Illini turnovers into no points - even as two of them came deep in Illinois territory.

Purdue had a chance at the end and reached the Illinois 30, but Danny Etling was hit as he threw and intercepted on fourth down, ending the game and giving Illinois its first Big Ten win under Tim Beckman

Akeem Hunt opened the scoring with a 62-yard touchdown run, both the Boilermakers' longest run of the season and its first rushing score of the season by a running back.

But Purdue didn't score after the first quarter, despite repeated opportunities, finishing with just 283 yards and going 4-of-15 on third down.

Some instant impressions from the loss.

The sequence that preceded halftime was a disaster for Purdue after Ricardo Allen stood up a receiver and stripped him of the ball deep in Illinois territory.

After Purdue reached first-and-10 at the Illinois 14 in the half's final minute, Etling was sacked and injured on third down.

Following, Paul Griggs hooked a go-ahead field goal as time expired.

Dropped passes just crushed Purdue, including a third-down drop by Danny Anthrop deep in Illinois territory that might have gone for a TD after one of Illinois' turnovers. Purdue failed to convert a fake field goal one play later.

The Boilermaker defense didn't play poorly, forcing four turnovers and allowing XX points to what's been a productive Illinois offense.

But after an initial first-quarter surge, the offense cost Purdue a chance to win.
