Visit won Jones over
Making an official visit to Purdue changed things up for Chris Jones perhaps more than he even expected.
Jones, a three-star cornerback from Jacksonville, had been committed to South Florida for about five months before making the trek to West Lafayette a couple weeks ago. Since then he has backed away from his previous pledge and given a commitment to the Boilermakers staff.
News of the switch broke Tuesday morning and Jones confirmed it in a text message.
Scoring a commitment from Jones gives head coach Darrell Hazell 16 commitments total in the Class of 2014 and continues what has been a serious run on verbal pledges over the last two weeks.
Six players have committed since the big Dec. 6-8 visit weekend. Jones found himself caught up in that momentum a bit after chatting with Hazell on campus.
"Talking to Coach Hazell is a moment you're gonna want to cherish forever," Jones told GoldandBlack.com after the official visit. "I talked with Coach Hazell and could fit, he's just that type of guy I feel I would love to be under. The type of guy I would love to be around."
Jones potentially rounds out a five-man defensive back class.
Brandon Roberts and Tim Cason are the cornerbacks while Juan Jenkins is listed at safety. Chicagoland athlete Simmie Cobbs will likely begin his Purdue career at safety as well. Jenkins and Roberts both committed in the last week.
Jones had previously planned to visit South Florida in January and was fielding interest from Wisconsin. Offers he previously considered include Florida International, Indiana, Massachusetts, Middle Tennessee State, Western Kentucky and Western Michigan, among others.
Instead it appears the 6-foot, 175-pound prospect is comfortable with shutting things down.
