Secondary coach leaves

After one season with Purdue, Jon Heacock is leaving.

The Boilermakers' secondary coach with deep ties to Darrell Hazell has accepted the defensive coordinator job at Toledo, per the Toledo Blade. Heacock also will coach the safeties, per the story.

Heacock spent two seasons as Hazell's defensive coordinator at Kent State before following him to Purdue and coaching only the defensive backs. Heacock and Hazell were teammates in college at Muskingum University in Ohio - where Heacock and both of his brothers also had coaching stints.

"I'm probably different than anybody in that building or on that campus," Jon Heacock said, referencing his relationship with Hazell. "I played college football with Darrell. My brother (Jeff) coached him and kind of got him started in this profession. He coached with my oldest brother. It was a very difficult decision just because of who he is and how I want to see him succeed. He and I had several discussions about the whole process.

"I think at the end of the day, I've just done what I do so long. In my 30 years, I've been either a head coach or a coordinator in probably 23 years or so. You kind of develop your own set of values and principles, and I get a chance to go be a coordinator at a place where I started my coaching career, and that's back in Ohio."

The loss means some Boilermaker defensive backs will be playing for their fourth position coach. Before Heacock, Greg Burns held the position in Danny Hope's last season in 2012. Burns had replaced Lou Anarumo.

Hazell will begin looking for a replacement immediately, per the release.

"I would like to thank Jon for his hard work over the last year in helping to restore the Purdue program," Hazell said in a statement. "I've known Coach Heacock for a long time, and I wish him well in his new job."

Purdue starts 6 a.m. workouts on Feb. 17 and begins spring practice on March 6.
