Teague's 47 not quite enough

INDIANAPOLIS - David Teague walked into IUPUI's gym just as his five other Purdue alumni teammates were being introduced.

Literally, he'd walked in the door just as Saturday night's Knox Indy Pro-Am Rivals Rematch scrimmage with Indiana was set to tip.

"My stepson had a birthday party today way out in Broad Ripple," Teague said. "I was cutting it pretty tight with that, so I didn't really get a chance to warm up. I think I shot an air-ball on my first shot."

For having basically step right out of the car and onto the floor, Teague's 47-point showing in Indiana's series-evening 116-113 win was something fans enjoyed, especially the Purdue fans, outnumbered in the Jungle, conservatively estimating, probably 4-to-1.

Teague, who played this past season in Colombia, scored his nearly four-dozen points off 16-of-33 shooting, 8-of-16 from three, and paired them with 14 rebounds, putting on a show for Purdue, which was outnumbered in bodies by two.

"A couple of our jump shots at the end," D.J. Byrd said half-seriously, "I thought we had some open ones we might have knocked down if we had our legs like we did in the first half."

Purdue led by as many as 16 in the second half after opening with a run of 10 straight points.

But IU surged back in the second half and overtook the Boilermakers behind some big shots from Jordan Hulls, who missed his first seven threes before making two critical ones in the closing minute-plus.

He had chance to ice the game at the foul line, though, with six seconds left, but uncharacteristically missed both, giving Purdue a chance to shoot a three to tie. But as the Boilermakers advanced the ball, Terone Johnson was called for a charge around center court as he caught the ball and turned up the floor.

"It was a terrible call," joked Johnson, who hopes to know this week where he'll be playing next season, with Italy, Spain, Belgium and Germany being possibilities. "He has to give me space when I turn around. I have to be able to come down and take a step."

Johnson scored 24 points for Purdue. Byrd added 13. Errick Peck, who'll be a teaching assistant in Purdue's communications department starting this fall, tallied 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Bobby Riddell scored 12 points and Mark Wohlford six.

"That's our accountant and lawyer out here," Byrd said.

Christian Watford scored 30 for IU, with Rod Wilmont finishing close behind with 28. Hulls had 25, Derek Elston 12 and Devin Dumas 10.

Indiana's win evened up the series after Purdue won last year's inaugural Pro-Am meeting at Cardinal Ritter High School. It is hoped that this will be an annual event.

"This was pretty fun," Johnson said. "You get to try to show out a little more and take some shots you wouldn't normally take in a (serious) game. Everyone had fun tonight. I just wish we could have come away with the win."

Teague is intent on playing in this game for years to come.

"I just tried to come out and play hard, have fun, enjoy these guys and the fans, talk some trash," Teague said. "You kind of take those things for granted when you're in the moment and you're playing in college. Things go by so fast. You look up and your career's over. It's always good to come back and play in a game like this."
