Alabama punter fills a need in Purdue's 2019 class

Purdue addressed one of the musts in its 2019 recruiting class this weekend by offering, and subsequently drawing a commitment from, Tuscaloosa (Ala.) punter Brooks Cormier.

The 6-foot-5, 215-pounder from American Christian Academy camped at Purdue last Monday, which amounted to an individual tryout for special teams coach Mark Tommerdahl and other members of Purdue's staff.

The offer came this weekend, concluding the Boilermaker staff's search for a likely successor for outgoing punter Joe Schopper.

"They said they're really looking forward to me getting out there and getting on the field," Cormier said.

He's yet to do so in the role he was recruited to Purdue for.

Cormier said he only picked up punting last spring and to this point has been solely an offensive player for his high school, as well as a soccer player.

"I really worked at it and got pretty good at it," Cormier said. "I thought, 'Hey, this could be something."

It culminated in this weekend's events, a Big Ten scholarship offer coming in the summer.

Penn State, Florida, UAB, Missouri, Wake Forest and Mississippi State were others who'd shown interest in Cormier prior to Purdue laying down the first offer.

Cormier's commitment is Purdue's 12th toward the 2019 class and fifth since Friday morning, with more potentially to come after about 20 visitors passed through West Lafayette this weekend.
