Finally, David Blough knows.
He will be Purdue's starting quarterback for the season opener against Eastern Kentucky.
Darrell Hazell told Blough and backup Elijah Sindelar the decision during a meeting Monday.
It wasn't exactly a suspense-filled wait for Blough because he was the returning starter, having started eight games as a redshirt freshman last season. But Blough still had to spend the offseason and three weeks of training camp without official word he'd resume that role this season. It didn't affect how he worked — didn't change Sindelar's approach either — but it certainly was nice to finally get confirmation from the head coach.
Especially after a camp in which Blough didn't quite split first-team reps with Sindelar, but Sindelar was part of a rotation working with the 1s. Both quarterbacks had a bit of an up-and-down camp, following poor completion days with good ones and then struggling again. Unofficially, Blough's completion percentage was about seven points higher than Sindelar's during team periods in camp. Blough threw more interceptions than Sindelar but capped camp with a solid performance in the jersey scrimmage, connecting on 11-of-14 passes for 188 yards, unofficially, and three touchdowns.
"David is an outstanding player and great leader," offensive coordinator Terry Malone said last week, before the scrimmage. "He’s someone we’re really counting on for his competitiveness as much as anything else. With him as our leader, I feel really good about a guy who is throwing the ball in the right spot the vast majority of the time. I’m really happy about that. We can always get better at our timing and our on-target throws, but in terms of going to the right spot with the ball and making the best reads, he’s doing a very good job."
More to come ...
