Chicago defensive back joins Purdue commitment run

Purdue landed its ninth commitment since last Monday on Monday night when Chicago defensive back Byron Perkins joined the Boilermaker recruiting class.

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound cornerback/safety becomes Purdue's third commitment for the secondary, joining Louisville's Kadin Smith and Indianapolis' Elijah Ball.

His commitment comes two weeks after he camped at Purdue, though he was offered long before, earning an offer from the Boilermaker coaches after a junior day visit in the spring. The camp earlier this month was Perkins' third visit to West Lafayette since the start of April.

His commitment represents another strike in Purdue's clear priority to accumulate size in the defensive backfield, as Perkins is all of 6-2, with exceptional length for his position.

He chose Purdue over early offers from Miami (Ohio), Louisiana Tech, New Mexico and others, plus interest from several Big Ten programs.

Perkins is Purdue's ninth commitment for 2018, all of which having come since last Monday, and third since Friday night.
