Heinsistshismindisbusyfocusingonhismotion,gettingthelengthyplaycallsincorrectly,makingsuretherestoftheoffenseislinedupandthenidentifyingdefensespre-andpost-snap.

It'salottotakeinforanyQB,especiallyatruefreshmanwhoadmitsthepaceoftrainingcamphasrisenanotchsincehispracticefielddebutinthespring.

ButEtlingispushingandstrivingtoputtogetherwhathethinksit'lltaketobenamedtheWeek1starter.Thoughhe'sbecomehesitanttosaytoomuchabouthimself-coordinatorandQBcoachJohnShoophasbeenstressinga"we"message-EtlingknowshehasashottobetheguyDarrellHazellchoosesintwoweeks.

Hazellsaidthoughallthequarterbackshavegottenbettereachdayearlyincamp,thereisonewhohasbeenslowtograspthe"language"oftheoffense.Hewouldn'tsaywhichone.

WhenaskedspecificallyaboutEtling,Hazellsaidhe's"gettingbetter."

"There'ssomuchthat'sbeingthrownathimrightnow,buthe'shandlingitprettywell,"Hazellsaid."Iexpecthimtokeepgrowingaswegoalong."

EtlingsaidheisOKwithcoachesalwayspushinghimtoimprove.

That'sanissueHazellhastalkedtoEtlingabout,lookingoffintendedreceiverstonotallowthedefensethatadvantage.

It'sjustanotherelementEtlingsaidhe'sworkingonashe'scontinuingtheunder-fireteachingasayoungplayer.

Mixandmatching

Guardwasoneofthepositionstowatchthiscamp,andsofar,it'sbeenentertaining.

CodyDavisworkedwiththefirstteamonDay1,thenJordanRoosmovedfromsecondtofirstteamforDay2andDaviswasbackwiththestartersonDay3.

Inthefirstdayinshoulderpads,Roos,asexpected,madeanimpression.Likeheshowedinthespring,Roosiseagertobephysical,evenpushingittoclosetothelimitattimes.DuringonedrillonMondaywhenoffensivelinemenwenthead-to-headwithdefensivelinemen,RoosmanhandledfreshmanJohnnyDanielsandflunghimtothegroundwhenitwasdone.Thatwasn'tappreciatedbytherestoftheD-line,BruceGastonshoutingouttoDanielsnottotakethatkindofplay.

Butit'ssimplywhoRoosis,ascragglyhairedandbeardednastylinemanwhoplayshardtothewhistle-andsometimesafterit.

"Heisatoughguyandacouplewordsthatmymomwouldbeupsetwith,"Bridgesaid."Jordanisthatguy.Helikestoplayhard.IlikethataboutJordan.We'vegottogethimnowtotakethatgreateffortandgreatattitudeandcombineitwithhisassignmentandhisfootworkandexecutebetter.Buthe'sgottheinternalstuff."

TheleftguardspotperhapsisbeingsolidifiedwithDevinSmith,whowasthoughttobepushedbyanotherredshirtfreshman,JasonKing.Sofar,though,Smithhasreignedontheleftside,andhiscombinationwithKevinPamphileattacklehasHazellhappy.

"Ireallylikeourleftsideoftheline.Thosetwoareplayingextremelywelltogether,"Hazellsaid."Soifyoucangetacouplemoreguystoplaylikethoseguys,youlikeyourchances."

Injuryupdate

DolapoMacarthyhadsomeswellinginhissurgericallyrepairedkneeonMonday,sohegotfewersnapsthanhehadthefirsttwopractices.Buthe'sstillconsideredastarterandhewasoneofthreereceivers,includingDannyAnthropandB.J.Knauf,Hazellmentionedasmakinganimpressionthisfall.

Third-stringlinebackerRubenIbarrawasinabootwithwhatHazellcalledananklesprainandcouldmisstwoweeks.

Quarterback-turned-receiverBilalMarshall,whohadimpressedhisfirsttwodaysofpracticeatthenewposition,wasoutonMondaywitha"hipflexorstrain,"accordingtoHazell.Hazelldidn'texpectittokeepMarshallouttoolong,sayingthestaffwasbeingcautious.

FreshmanRa'ZahnHowardpassedhissicklecellanemiatest,Hazellsaid,andwasonthefieldforthefirsttimeparticipatingonMonday.

"Justwatchinghimforthefirsttime,he'sgotsomeprettygoodfeetfora324-poundguy,"Hazellsaid.

TurningitupWithshoulderpadsonforthefirsttimethiscamp,PurduepickedupitsintensityandphysicalityonDay3.
