Five things that mattered for Purdue in Hartford

HARTFORD — Purdue's headed back to the Sweet 16 for the third time in as many years.

The Boilermakers advanced to the NCAA Tournament's second weekend by virtue of a pair of comfortable wins over Old Dominion and Villanova.

Here are five reasons the Boilermakers are left standing.

CARSEN EDWARDS' BEST

Obviously, Purdue's All-American carried it in Hartford, highlighted by one of the great performances in Boilermaker history — a 42-point game against defending-champ Villanova.

But Edwards was very good, too, vs. Old Dominion, 7-of-23 shooting aside.

Much has been made — and rightfully so, because it's important — about Edwards' shooting percentages and inefficiency often this season, and Matt Painter's line has always been that Edwards is "our guy" and just as likely to "carry us" as the opposite extreme. But he'd not carried Purdue, really, in a game of significance since the game at Penn State, really, and in between, the opposite extreme was more prevalent, especially away from Mackey Arena.
