Four-star wide receiver recruit commits to Purdue

More: Purdue commitments | Purdue wide receiver targets

Purdue's landed its third commitment for the 2019 class, as Ohio four-star athlete Mershawn Rice announced for the Boilermakers Friday night.

Recruiting as a wide receiver, the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder chose Purdue over offers from Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Kentucky, Indiana and many more.

Rice visited for Purdue's regular season-finale win over Indiana, then again for the program's spring game.

"I liked the atmosphere," he said in the spring of the IU game visit, "and Indiana being their rivals, it was a more fun game to go to, because the teams don't like each other.

"They like to pass the ball, I could tell from the way they used (Anthony Mahoungou)."

As a junior at Reynoldsburg, Rice caught 36 passes for about 700 yards and eight scores. On defense, he intercepted three passes.

The Reynoldsburg, Ohio, native joins fellow four-star recruit George Karlaftis and Chase Triplett in Purdue's class thus far.

Boilermaker coaches will hope that Rice represents the beginning of an outstanding wide receiver class, with Purdue being a contender for several promising in-state prospects, too, in David Bell, Craig Young and Bryce Kirtz, in addition to other targets.
