Offensive lineman jumps at Purdue offer

Kirk Barron may have known a Purdue offer was coming.

That didn't make it any less impactful when Darrell Hazell made it official in a brief conversation following his program's elite camp Friday night.
After talking for a moment with Hazell, then offensive line coach Jim Bridge, the offensive lineman from Mishawaka Marian choked up, he admitted later, partly out of excitement for scoring an offer he coveted and partly out of regret he'd be breaking the commitment he made to Ohio University.
After stepping outside the practice field gates for a few minutes to contact Ohio coaches, Barron committed to Purdue, news that was met with celebration by Boilermaker coaches, one of which, John Shoop, playfully jumped into the center recruit's arms.
Barron gives Purdue its third Class of 2014 commitment, with more possibly to follow this weekend as QB David Blough will speak with Hazell tomorrow about recruiting, he said, and its first in-state get.
"It's a Big Ten school and it's in-state," Barron said. "It's not a six-hour drive; it's closer to two hours. And I get to be around my family, so that's nice."
Barron said he'd been talking with Purdue coaches all week, perhaps having an inkling Friday night's news might be coming after he impressed coaches at last Saturday's lineman camp in West Lafayette.
"They wanted to get another eval on me," Barron said of why he returned for a second camp outing in less than a week at Purdue. "I wanted to come back and see them again. They were talking about having another staff meeting to talk about recruiting and I was just really excited about it."
GoldandBlack.com will have much more on Barron next week.
