Purdue first to offer in-state wide receiver

When Purdue issued Jeffersonville wide receiver Tyrone Williams his first scholarship offer earlier this month, it was emphatic in its opinion of him.
"They said I could be a big-time player at their place," Williams said of the phone call he received from Boilermaker offensive coordinator Gary Nord. "Most of the schools I talk to say they want me in their program, but he said he thinks they really need me in their program, because they think I can be very good there. They said they like my talent and athleticism."

The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder has since also drawn an offer from Akron, while Kentucky, Louisville, Indiana, Cincinnati, Arkansas and Wisconsin are among some of the other big schools recruiting him.
Purdue, though, was quickest to decide on him.
Williams said he's been to the West Lafayette five times, most recently for a spring practice in late March, and will return again next month.
"I really like the school and its academics," he said. "I like the nursing school, and that's what I want to go into. I'm going back up there June 18 to see if I want to commit or not."
That visit will be for a one-day camp. He'll also attend camps at Kentucky and Cincinnati, if not more.
Williams said the Purdue offer - and his offers to date - didn't exactly come out of the blue.
"I knew it was coming. I expected it," he said. "I think there's more coming now that coaches are coming back from traveling. I haven't really talked to a lot of coaches yet about them offering."
After not playing football earlier in his high school career at Jeffersonville, Williams joined the Red Devil team as a junior and caught about 60 passes for more than 1,000 yards.
Williams claims 4.4 40-yard dash speed and 10.8 speed in the 100-meter dash as a member of his school's track team.
"It's my speed," Williams said, "and hands, the way I can catch it, and my athleticism that has impressed schools."
