Purdue heads to familiar territory for WNIT opener

Purdue heads on the road for the WNIT, as it was expecting to do, but won't have to travel far.

The Boilermakers play at IUPUI, coached by former Boilermaker Austin Parkinson, in the first round on Thursday. A time had yet to be announced as of late Monday.

Purdue (18-13) was one of the "last four out" of the NCAA Tournament bracket, released earlier in the evening, and it hadn't put in a bid for the WNIT, meaning the Boilermakers will play on the road. The winner of Purdue-IUPUI will face either Ball State or Middle Tennessee in the second round of the 64-team field.

The Boilermakers are 4-1 all-time against IUPUI, but lost the last meeting, when Parkinson's team beat Sharon Versyp's 67-62 in Mackey Arena on Dec. 21, 2016.

IUPUI finished 22-9 overall this season, including 13-5 in the Horizon League, losing in the semifinals of the conference tournament; the Jaguars were 13-3 in The Jungle, their home gym on IUPUI's campus.

Purdue is 3-2 all-time in the WNIT, with appearances in 1998 and 2010.
