Quick Count: Purdue practice No. 16

The Boilermakers completed their last two-a-day Wednesday afternoon, going for just short of two hours outside at the Bimel practice field.

Following are observations:

Jake Replogle and Evan Panfil were again participants after the defensive linemen sat out the shortened morning practice.

Darrell Hazell said it was nothing more than rest for two players who had gotten plenty of snaps in their careers, along with an opportunity to get others — mainly Gelen Robinson, Wyatt Cook and Langston Newton — in with the first team.

One who was still absent, however, was Martesse Patterson. The sophomore has been sidelined since tweaked his knee on Monday morning, but predicted a Wednesday return. Hazell said Patterson, the starting left tackle, might have been able to go had it been a game day, but no reason to push it now.

• Purdue did suffer what looked like a left knee injury, however, to a third-teamer. More details coming in "Analysis." Maybe significant, and certainly a tough break if so.

• The defense has a three-man rotation going right now at safety, with the rise of freshman Navon Mosley, who joins veterans Robert Gregory and Leroy Clark. Gregory, a fifth-year senior, is a bit of a swing man, getting first team reps both at Mosley's spot and Clark's.
