#2 —PURDUE HIRES JEFF BROHM

Again, any other year ...

Any other year, the hiring of a new football coach — particularly when that coach was one of the hottest commodities on the market in a given year — would top a list like this with no close second.

And maybe it should.

But we're putting it at 2, which isn't to play down the significance of Purdue hiring Jeff Brohm away from Western Kentucky to replace the fired-in-season Darrell Hazell.

While no one knows how the next few years will turn out, consensus opinion has been that Purdue made one of the best hires of the coaching-change cycle this year, landing the guy new athletic director Mike Bobinski set out for despite a competitive marketplace. Cincinnati, Baylor and Oregon also pursued Brohm in some form or another, yet he landed at Purdue, which now can claim to have one of the brightest offensive minds in the game, by reputation, and a proven winner.

Brohm's teams at Western Kentucky went 30-10 and won two Conference-USA titles and three bowl games in as many years in Bowling Green while boasting some of the most prolific offenses in college football.

Buoyed by significantly increased resources allotted to football and a greater stated commitment to the sport from both the athletic department and university alike, a moribund Purdue program hopes its fortunes will now turn on what it'll hope to be a transformational hire.
