Versyp snags Nebraska post for '18 Purdue class

Nyagoa Gony thought Purdue was going to offer during her official visit this weekend.

When it did, the Nebraska forward thought the opportunity was too good to pass up, as she committed Sunday to become the third member of the 2018 recruiting class. Gony, a 6-foot-3 defensive-minded forward, loved the family atmosphere she found at Purdue.

"Everyone is there for your best interest, not just the staff but others," she said via phone after arriving back in Lincoln. "... That's one of my top priorities and it's like being part of something that's bigger than myself and that's something I really value. They welcomed me with open arms."

Gony, who played only a couple years of AAU basketball, picked Purdue over South Dakota St., but others had started to show interest recently. But she wasn't willing to wait, deciding that the Boilermakers were the best fit.

The senior Lincoln High School averaged approximately a double-double last season, plus had 94 blocks in 22 games.

"My greatest strength is blocking shots," she said, when asked to describe her game. "And rebounding. I'm more of a defensive player, at least I think I am.

"I feel I still have a lot of room to improve on. I'm not satisfied with the level I'm at and know I can improve. There's that potential that I know that I have."

Gony joins the Indiana backcourt combination of Cassidy Hardin (Center Grove) and Kayana Traylor (Martinsville) in the '18 class.
