2023 Projection: Rotational Running Back
After a short stint at UNLV as a true freshman during the 2020 season, Dylan Downing made the decision to enter the transfer portal and move closer to home.
It was a welcomed site for the 2021 Boilermaker Football Team, as the depth at that position was thin. Downing has operated as a short yardage, change of pace back in his two seasons in West Lafayette.
Since arriving, he has carried the ball 137 times for 529 yards and scored five touchdowns. For a backup running back, this is a great production. Last season, after King Doerue went down, many thought the previous staff would turn to Downing for a full-time bell-cow type of role, which would end up going to Devin Mockobee.
But, if Mockobee is lightning, Dylan Downing can serve as the thunder, while he is not 230 pounds, he is an in-between-the-tackles runner, punishing defenders in the box.
Expect Downing to have a similar role during the 2023 season, where he and Tyrone Tracy Jr should spell Mockobee when he needs a break, or if there is a short-yardage situation, Coach Harrell may turn to the veteran backup.
